Myanmar’s military junta has announced a temporary ceasefire from April 2 to April 22 to aid in earthquake relief and reconstruction following last week’s deadly 7.7-magnitude quake, which has killed at least 2,886 people, with hundreds still missing.
This comes after rebel groups had already declared their own ceasefire to support relief efforts.
Tensions flared earlier this week when military troops opened fire on a Chinese Red Cross aid convoy in eastern Shan State, allegedly for not stopping despite warnings.
No injuries were reported.
China urged all parties to focus on relief, while international aid continues arriving. The humanitarian crisis is deepening amid Myanmar’s ongoing civil war, and the true death toll is feared to be higher than official figures.
