UK Sky Group sues Warner Bros. over rights to co-produce new Harry Potter TV series

Sky Group, a British media conglomerate, has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. over claims that the studio breached an agreement regarding the production of a new Harry Potter TV series.

According to court documents, Sky alleges that Warner Bros. violated a 2019 deal that allowed Sky to co-produce and distribute Max shows, including the highly anticipated Harry Potter series, to UK and European audiences.

The dispute centres around Warner Bros.’ decision to exclude Sky from the co-production, which Sky claims will cost them hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue.

Sky’s lawsuit accuses Warner of deliberately breaking the agreement after its merger with Discovery in 2021 to form Warner Bros. Discovery.

The British company argues that Warner Bros. is keeping the Harry Potter series for itself to boost the Max streaming service in Europe. Sky is demanding compensation for damages and insists the series be submitted for co-production as originally agreed.

Warner Bros., however, dismissed the lawsuit as a “baseless attempt” by Sky to gain leverage in ongoing negotiations for content distribution, with current deals set to expire in 2025.
