Discord, the popular messaging and VoIP platform, has been banned in both Russia and Türkiye this week over safety and security concerns, following court orders in both countries.
Russia’s media watchdog, Roskomnadzor, imposed a ban on the US-based platform after it failed to comply with demands to remove 947 posts containing illegal content.
These posts allegedly included calls for suicide, extremism, sexual abuse of children, and “LGBT propaganda.” Discord was also fined 3.5 million rubles for non-compliance and had previously ignored a larger fine. The ban aims to prevent the platform from being used for terrorist and extremist activities, as well as drug sales. Despite many Russian users moving to Telegram due to Western sanctions, Discord remains popular globally, especially among gamers and cryptocurrency communities.
Türkiye followed suit, blocking access to Discord after concerns were raised about its use for child grooming, blackmail, and cyberbullying.
The decision, made by the Ankara First Criminal Court of Peace, came after Turkish media reported public outrage over certain Discord communities praising a double murder committed by a 19-year-old man.
Turkish authorities cited “sufficient suspicion” of crimes such as child sexual abuse and obscenity being committed via the platform.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc emphasised Türkiye’s determination to protect youth from harmful online content, vowing not to allow such attempts to undermine “social values”.
The name says it all. Who would want to be named ” discord” hey ?? Who is hiding behind ” discord” ? soros or an alike malevolent ??
