US aerospace giant Boeing has announced plans to reduce its workforce by 10%, which equates to approximately 17,000 jobs, as part of efforts to manage mounting financial losses.
The layoffs will affect both executives and general employees, according to a company-wide memo issued by Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who assumed leadership just two months ago. Boeing currently employs around 170,000 people globally.
Ortberg acknowledged the severity of the situation, citing significant challenges faced by the company, compounded by a strike involving 33,000 hourly workers. He described the job cuts as a “tough decision” necessary to align workforce levels with financial realities and long-term goals.
In addition to workforce reductions, Boeing is postponing the development of its 777X aircraft until 2026 and will cease production of its 767 commercial freighters by 2027, after fulfilling current orders.
The company also filed an unfair labour practice charge this week against the union representing its striking workers, accusing the union of not negotiating in good faith. Boeing had previously withdrawn its contract offer to the union, citing stalled negotiations over wage increases and other benefits.
Boeing’s preliminary financial report indicates an expected cash outflow of $1.3 billion in the third quarter and a projected loss of $9.97 per share.
