A 34-year-old man has been arrested following a dramatic series of events that began with an alleged vehicle theft in Point Chevalier and ended in a multi-vehicle crash on Auckland’s Northern Motorway near Dairy Flat.
The incident unfolded around 2:40 p.m. when police were called to Walmer Road in Point Chevalier.
The man allegedly attempted to steal a vehicle from an elderly woman before successfully taking another vehicle from a second person on the same road. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported during the initial theft.
Police tracked the stolen vehicle as it headed north with the assistance of the Air Support Unit and traffic cameras. Despite efforts to stop the vehicle with road spikes, the driver continued onto the Northern Motorway.
Inspector Daniel Meade stated that a police pursuit was not initiated due to safety concerns. “At around 3 p.m., the driver was involved in a multi-vehicle crash where the stolen vehicle rolled,” said Inspector Meade. Two people, including the alleged offender, sustained moderate injuries in the crash.
While on the motorway, the man allegedly caused damage to multiple vehicles and knocked a motorcyclist off their bike, according to police. The Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination, and the road is expected to reopen within the hour.
The 34-year-old man faces potential charges, and investigations into the incident are ongoing. The case has also been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) for further review.
