Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a statewide disaster over soaring diesel prices and fuel shortages.
The 30-day declaration temporarily will allow dyed diesel to be used on public roads, increased allowable weights for fuel and agricultural loads and relaxed some emissions requirements. Abbott also asked federal authorities to waive ultra-low sulphur diesel rules to increase supply.
Diesel prices in Texas had climbed to an average $US5.86 a gallon, up from $US3.30 in February. Democrats called for the state fuel tax to be suspended and blamed US foreign policy for rising costs.
