Dunedin woman Julie Elisabeth Morton has been sentenced to three years and two months in prison after admitting to stealing nearly $1 million from her mother using an enduring power of attorney.
Between 2015 and 2018, Morton siphoned $965,310 for personal expenses, including jewellry, clothing, and online shopping, leaving her brother, John Morton, with a significantly reduced inheritance. J
John told media he felt betrayed and devastated over the crime, especially as the court did not order reparation, leaving him feeling it was “a slap in the face.” Despite her previous conviction for a similar theft in 1997, Julie Morton offered little insight or remorse, describing her compulsion to steal but failing to explain her actions fully.
The court acknowledged the vulnerability of Morton’s mother, who lost capacity to manage her affairs in 2015, as well as the severe breach of trust, but the judge noted the lengthy gap between the two crimes as evidence that Julie Morton could live without offending.
However, John Morton remained unconvinced, lambasting the lenient sentence and lack of financial restitution. He feared his sister would reoffend if given the chance, calling her crimes opportunistic rather than driven by family grief, as her defense claimed.
