Children’s Minister Karen Chhour has confirmed that the young offenders involved in a rooftop incident at an Oranga Tamariki youth justice residence in Auckland will face consequences for their actions.
The incident, which began around 6:30 p.m. last night, saw 13 young people gain access to the roof of the Korowai Manaaki residence. By late this morning, all individuals had come down, with Chhour personally witnessing the final two descend.
Chhour said no demands were made or met during the standoff, as this was not a negotiation.
This is the first rooftop incident at a youth justice residence in 2024, compared to 15 similar incidents in 2023, said Chhour.
Significant changes have been made to improve the safety and security of these facilities following the release of a critical review in 2023. An assessment is underway to determine how the incident occurred and what further measures can be taken to prevent future occurrences.
And the reaction of Oranga Tamariki is exactly why these events occur…ie the threat that there will be repercussions.
Kinda reminds me of the ‘repercussions’ that the kids at Lake Alice suffered ie torture, dehumanisations, illegal ECT, etc.
O-T and it’s former beast CYFS are NOT fit for purpose.
Not being allowed out for exercise and fresh air is tantamount to the GULAG, the penal colonies of French Guyana, Chinese work camps, North Korean slave labour camps, Konzentration Kamps, and Chain Gangs in the American south (ie Angola, Arkansas, etc.)
Yes how DARE they! Not off bucket loads of public money on crepes, were they. Its always the least deserving of harsh treatment who get the very worst of it.
