Hungary thwarts NATO-linked plot to illegally arm Ukraine

Hungary - NATO news

Hungarian counterintelligence has intercepted an attempt by foreign intelligence services to channel Hungarian-manufactured weapons to Ukraine, according to Gergely Gulyas, Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Gulyas confirmed that both NATO-aligned and other international agencies tried to secure arms for Ukrainian forces via Hungary’s military industry, but Budapest stopped the plan, reiterating its stance against supplying arms to Ukraine.

Hungary, which has consistently refused to back Ukraine militarily, maintains a policy of neutrality in the conflict, urging a focus on ceasefire and peace negotiations.

Since the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, Hungary has stood alone within the EU in opposing unconditional support for Kiev, restricting weapon transit and exports.

Orban’s government continues to resist EU sanctions on Russian energy and has called for a shift in EU policy towards a peaceful resolution. Recent criticisms from Orban of both Ukraine’s military strategies and EU policies reveal an increasingly strained relationship with Brussels, which he accuses of seeking political change in Hungary.
