Dr. Anthony Fauci faces backlash over a new paper co-authored with Gregory Folkers, published in the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal, where he criticises former President Donald Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and reaffirms the debunked natural origin theory of the virus.
Fauci claims Trump minimised the pandemic’s seriousness and failed to promote preventive measures such as masks and social distancing, while endorsing unproven treatments like bleach injections, hydroxychloroquine, and ivermectin.
However, media outlets, including Politifact, have debunked the claim that Trump instructed people to inject bleach, labelling such accusations as “mostly false.”
The paper also reiterates Fauci’s stance that COVID-19 likely originated in an animal reservoir, citing evolutionary virologists’ evidence, but makes no mention of the lab-leak theory.
Critics on social media, including journalists and conservative commentators, labelled Fauci’s work as misleading and an “embarrassment.”
They highlighted his reliance on previously disputed research supporting the natural origin theory and accused him of perpetuating inaccuracies about Trump’s actions during the pandemic. The NIH has yet to respond to the controversy surrounding the publication
