Hawke’s Bay officials are preparing for potential flooding as an Orange Heavy Rain Warning has been issued by MetService for Boxing Day.
The warning covers Gisborne-Tairāwhiti and areas of Hawke’s Bay north of Napier, with up to 130mm of rain expected, possibly more in localised areas, along with potential thunderstorms.
The heavy rain could cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly, resulting in flooding and slips.
The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has called staff back from leave to monitor river levels, particularly in Wairoa, where they may need to open minor river mouths if conditions worsen.
While the Wairoa River is currently stable, residents are urged to stay alert as river levels could rise quickly during the deluge. Officials assure the community that updates will be provided as needed, and MetService notes only a minimal chance of upgrading the warning to red.
