A new diesel power plant is set to be developed at Marsden Point, marking a significant shift in New Zealand’s energy strategy, said Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones.
The refinery company, strategically positioned near a deepwater port, plans to generate electricity by importing and utilizing diesel, a move lauded by Jones as “shrewd thinking.”
Jones emphasised the necessity of fossil fuels for industry, manufacturing, and economic growth, while criticising environmental activists—whom he dubbed “climate munchkins”—for opposing oil and gas developments.
His comments also took aim at legal challenges from climate alarmists seeking to curb fossil fuel expansion through the Supreme Court.
Jones called for a review of energy policies, arguing that the country’s reliance on renewable energy and corporate decisions had contributed to job losses and an unreliable power supply.
As winter approaches, concerns over energy security continue to grow, he said, sparking renewed debate over the balance between environmental commitments and economic resilience.
Critics however responded to the news urging Jones to go a step further and rebuild the refinery entirely.
Fantastic news yesterday from Marsden Point. The refinery company is planning to generate electricity from a new diesel power plant.
Given they are next to a valuable deepwater port, easy to import lots more diesel, very shrewd thinking.
Of course the Climate munchkins will…

Another Ardern and Co deliberate sabotage of the NZ economy and sustainability of fossil fuel supplies detrimental and injurious to this country’s prosperity and well being
It is nice to know this cancerous malignant growth has been exenterated and surgically removed from Our shores even if of ‘her’ own volition
But ‘her’ toxic marauding legacy of treachery lies deception and fraud still lingers on
Maggot
That’s a good start. The adults are back in charge.
Rebuilding the refinery should be number one on govts to-do list.
Munchkins=Oompa Loompas
Why zero reporting on this in MSM?
To obfuscate the fact they were derelict in their duties when reporting the significance of its removal
It would be perhaps more shrewd to manufacture diesel at Marsden Point?
