The tight-knit community of Katikati in the Bay of Plenty is in mourning following the tragic death of 4-year-old Timothy Tu’uaki Rolleston-Bryan, who was fatally injured in a dog attack on Friday afternoon.
Described by his family as having “a little mischief in his smile, a little wild in his eyes, but a heart full of cuteness,” Timothy — affectionately known as Timoti — was transported in critical condition to the Katikati Medical Centre after the attack but sadly died a short time later.
The incident, which occurred around 2:50pm, also left another person with moderate injuries. That individual remains in hospital.
A family notice posted online expressed deep sorrow, with a touching message: “You will be dearly missed, our little Timoti. Go on, little boy, your mum will be awaiting your arrival.” The child’s late mother passed away previously.
Timothy will lie at Otawhiwhi Marae in Waihi Beach before his funeral, scheduled for Tuesday. A family spokesperson declined to comment further, asking for privacy during this time of grief.
Shaan Kingi, a spokesperson for nearby Tuapiro Marae, said the tragedy has rocked the small community. “We are all shocked. All our focus is directed to the grieving family and the survivor,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are affected by the loss. At this time, our priority will be to support our whānau through this hard time.”
Kingi also extended thanks to emergency services and staff at the Katikati Medical Centre, saying they “did everything they could” during the emergency.
Animal Management staff have seized the dogs involved in the attack. Police confirmed they are conducting inquiries on behalf of the Coroner. Family members said they are still unsure how the incident unfolded but have provided statements to police.
The kid was killed by the families own dogs.
Feral owners, feral dogs. Owners of killer dogs should be jailed and forbidden to own animals of any kind forever.
I simply cannot understand why there is not a law for all dogs to be muzzled when off the leash. Ferals would get used to it eventually – muzzle the dog or go to jail.
Babies and toddlers do not mix well with any dogs, or any animals for that matter. I don’t think the dog brain can understand what little humans are.
Pitties have such a small hierarchy (the boss and me) and are so narrowly bred for fighting characteristics they should be banned altogether – and that includes staffies and English bull terriers.
I will never forget though, that the nastiest natured ready to attack dog I have ever encountered was a cocker spaniel. Just like its owner.
I agree everywhere i go now i come across these weaponised dogs.
Put the owners in JAIL.
Ya ya ya, everywhere I go now i come across another deadly car accident with a high-powered car.
Put the owners in jail.
Poor little guy. What a terrible end to a short little life.
My son is 3, so this hits hard. I couldn’t even imagine.
Goodspeed little boy
