Ryan Andrew Brown was sentenced to 12 months in prison after running from the public gallery and punching Judge Bruce Davidson in a “completely unprovoked” attack at Wellington District Court in March.
Brown, who had been struggling with drug addiction and mental health issues, said he wanted to return to jail to get help.
The incident, labelled “unprecedented” by police, caused disruption and symbolic harm to the justice system.
Brown also faced sentencing for unrelated assaults and other offences. Despite expressing remorse and reading an apology in court, the judge emphasised the seriousness of attacking a judicial officer.

“symbolic harm”. What’s next? Theoretical crime?
“COMPLETELY UNPROVOKED” where have we heard that before?? Oh yes, Russia’s attack on Ukraine was completely unprovoked. Yea right.
Looks like these Nasi sorry Judges
Need cages
Reminds me of Augusta Wallace
Attacked by some primitive with a machete in 1990
Why is it a 12 month sentance? Punching someone is normally home detention or suspended sentence.
Because a judge was punched – they are special, don’t you know – specially vile, most of them.
Judges get far too much respect.
It would be no different, if it was a politician or a cop. It shouldn’t be, in my view but then the notion of equality of treatment is just that, in NZ.
Symbolic harm to the justice system. That would make sense, were the justice system just.

Got 12 months because they don’t like being a victim
