VTNZ bribery scandal forces 322 drivers to re-sit licences

More than 300 people will have to re-sit their driving tests after Vehicle Testing New Zealand (VTNZ) officers at Auckland’s Highbrook branch allegedly accepted bribes to pass applicants.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said five driver testing officers were dismissed for “serious misconduct” and had their endorsements suspended, with investigations ongoing. The alleged scheme began in 2023, prompting NZTA to contact 322 drivers who passed under those officers and require them to re-sit practical tests at no cost.

Police have launched a criminal investigation, while VTNZ has suspended licence testing at the branch and pledged full cooperation, saying it has zero tolerance for dishonesty and has reviewed security systems to protect public safety.
