Police have arrested and charged a 20-year-old man following an antisocial road user gathering in Gisborne during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Officers were alerted shortly after midnight on December 30 to reports of around a dozen vehicles engaging in dangerous driving at the intersection of Whatatutu and Matawai roads. Multiple members of the public contacted Police, complaining about the behaviour.
When Police arrived at the scene, the group quickly dispersed. One vehicle failed to stop when signalled and continued to be driven dangerously before being located further along Whatatutu Road.

The driver then fled on foot, leaving the vehicle behind. Police secured and impounded the car and later identified the driver through further enquiries.
The man was located and arrested later the same day. He is due to appear in the Gisborne District Court on Monday, January 5 charged with failing to stop for Police, dangerous driving, and operating a vehicle causing sustained loss of traction.
Police have thanked members of the public for reporting the antisocial activity and say they will continue to take action to prevent this behaviour on local roads, urging people to contact Police if similar incidents occur.
