US President Donald Trump has threatened to deploy immigration enforcement officers to airports across the country as a funding impasse leaves key security agencies without pay.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement could be reassigned to handle airport security if lawmakers fail to reach an agreement to fund the Department of Homeland Security.
“I will move our brilliant and patriotic ICE Agents to the Airports where they will do Security like no one has ever seen before,” Trump wrote.
The warning comes as DHS has remained unfunded since mid-February, after Congress was unable to pass a spending deal. The lapse has left personnel from the Transportation Security Administration working without pay, raising concerns about the sustainability of airport security operations.
Efforts to resolve the standoff faltered on Friday when a bill aimed at restoring DHS funding and ensuring payment for TSA workers failed to advance in the Senate.
The ongoing deadlock has intensified pressure on lawmakers to reach a compromise, with the potential redeployment of ICE agents adding a new dimension to the dispute over federal funding and national security.
