The Silver Ferns made a commanding start to their Constellation Cup campaign, defeating Australia 56-50 in Auckland to extend the Diamonds’ losing streak on New Zealand soil to 11 matches.
Building on their Commonwealth Games gold medal triumph, the hosts controlled much of the contest through relentless defensive pressure from Kelly Jackson and Karin Burger, while Grace Nweke delivered an outstanding shooting performance with 40 goals from 41 attempts. New Zealand established a 32-22 halftime advantage and stretched their lead to 15 goals during the third quarter before Australia mounted a late recovery, winning the final period 17-11.
Kimiora Poi impressed in the midcourt, while veteran Te Paea Selby-Rickit made her international return after three years away. Despite the Diamonds’ spirited finish, the Silver Ferns comfortably secured the opening Test, with the series moving to Christchurch on Wednesday. New Zealand will be targeting at least three victories from the four-match series, potentially allowing them to reclaim the world number one ranking from Australia.
