YouTube bans new Alex Jones channel in less than 24 hours

YouTube has reignited debate over censorship and free speech after terminating new channels created by Alex Jones and Nick Fuentes less than 24 hours after their launch.

The move came despite Google’s recent acknowledgment of past government pressure by the Joe Biden administration to censor and its announcement of an upcoming October pilot programme to reinstate some previously banned accounts.

In a statement posted on X, YouTube defended its actions, saying: “We terminated these channels as it’s still against our rules for previously terminated users to start new channels – the pilot program for terminations (that many folks referenced this week) isn’t available yet and will be a limited pilot program to start. We’ll have more to share on how the pilot program will work, who is eligible, and how creators can access it very soon.”

The decision sparked swift criticism from conservative figures, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who accused YouTube of selective enforcement and undermining free expression.

Reactions online were equally scathing. One commenter wrote, “So YouTube is piloting free speech? Hasn’t the pilot been the previous 240 years?” Others accused the platform of manipulating speech under the guise of policy, with one remarking, “So you’re going to see who is eligible for free speech! So nothing has changed.”

Another user said the move highlighted Big Tech’s outsized influence: “It’s impressive that we live in a world where YouTube and Google control our thoughts. Why not let people watch what they want? Cutting out a man’s tongue says more about you – the cutter – than the man with no tongue.”
