Independent investigative reporter Penny Marie examines what a new US report means for New Zealand’s schools, courts, and Parliament
For two decades, psychological research into “gender ideology” has run one direction: study the people who question it. A report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has now turned that question around – measuring, for the first time, the psychology of the people demanding compliance rather than the people asking questions.
Penny Marie, founder of Let Kids Be Kids NZ, has examined the report’s findings and traced the same pattern already on the public record here at home.
A pattern already documented in New Zealand
Marie’s new piece draws together threads she has reported individually over the past year:
- the Community Matters Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Fund’s financing of a booklet labelling concerned parents “extremist”;
- PPTA’s development of guidance for teachers on students holding “far-right” views, including teenagers who identify as Trump supporters;
- the ongoing High Court challenge to New Zealand’s puberty blocker pause, brought by WPATH’s local affiliate while WPATH itself faces a US federal lawsuit over its own clinical claims;
- and the unresolved question of whether “sex” in the Human Rights Act 1993 was ever meant to include “gender identity” – an interpretation adopted administratively in 2006 and never put to Parliament.
“This report doesn’t hand anyone a verdict,” Marie says. “What it hands us is the first real data on a question nobody in twenty years of research thought to ask. I’ve laid out what’s already happening here next to it. I’m asking readers to draw their own conclusions – and to tell me if the pattern matches what they’ve lived.”
