Israeli election leaves rival blocs short of majority

AP26300400050606

With more than 90% of votes counted, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc is projected to win 53 seats, while the opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot is projected to win 48.

Arab parties are projected to win a record 19 seats.

None of the blocs can reach the 61 seats needed for a majority without additional support.

Netanyahu has ruled out governing with Arab parties, while Eisenkot has called for a “Zionist mobilisation government” and refused to serve under Netanyahu.
