‘Dad’s Army’ Private Pike actor Ian Lavender dies, aged 77

Ian Lavender, beloved for his role as Private Pike in the classic TV series ‘Dad’s Army’, has passed away at 77.

Born in Birmingham, Lavender became a household name through his portrayal of Pike, the youngest and most naive member of the Home Guard platoon depicted in the series that aired from 1968 to 1977. His character, known for his clashes with Captain Mainwaring and the iconic rebuke, ‘You stupid boy!’, became a defining part of his career.

Beyond Dad’s Army, Lavender’s career spanned other television comedies, including appearances in ‘Yes Minister’ and a significant role in ‘EastEnders’ as Derek Harkinson, a character he returned to play in 2016. His acting journey began shortly after his studies at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, leading to a decade-long stint in Dad’s Army and making him the last surviving main cast member of the series at his passing.

Dad’s Army itself remains a jewel in British television history, its humour and catchphrases like ‘don’t panic!’ and ‘they don’t like it up ’em!’ enduring in British popular culture. The series, set during World War Two, focused on a Home Guard platoon’s comedic exploits, attracting over 18 million viewers at its peak.

In addition to his television work, Lavender also graced the stage, including in productions like ‘The Merchant of Venice.’ His time on EastEnders highlighted his versatility, joining the soap in 2001 and returning for a brief period in 2016, only to leave again in 2017 due to health issues with sepsis.

The 50th anniversary of Dad’s Army in 2018 was celebrated with a commemorative collection of stamps by Royal Mail, marking the lasting impact of the show and Lavender’s role in it.
