Grateful Dead co-founder and legendary bassist Phil Lesh passes away at 84

Phil Lesh, iconic bassist and a founding member of the Grateful Dead, has passed away peacefully at the age of 84, surrounded by family.

News of his death was shared through his official Instagram page on October 25, with a heartfelt message honouring his legacy in music.

“Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him and leaves behind a legacy of music and love,” the statement read, while also requesting privacy for the Lesh family.

Lesh, who co-wrote some of the band’s best-known songs, was an integral part of the Grateful Dead’s success over 30 years and 13 studio albums.

Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 1994, Lesh leaves behind his wife, Jill, and two sons, Grahame and Brian. No cause of death has been disclosed.
