Alcohol consumption is responsible for roughly 800,000 deaths every year in Europe, making it a factor in about one in eleven deaths, according to a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The agency says Europe has the highest alcohol consumption levels in the world, with drinking driving high rates of injury, violence and premature death, it claims.
Using 2019 data, the report links alcohol to nearly 145,000 injury-related deaths, largely from self-harm, road crashes and falls, and highlights its role in domestic abuse and other violent assaults.
Young people are especially vulnerable, with alcohol harming brain development, decision-making, learning and long-term mental health, while remaining a leading cause of injury-related disability and early death among adolescents and young adults.
The burden is uneven across the region, with eastern European countries accounting for around half of alcohol-related injury deaths.
