Teens in China fined USD $309k for urinating in restaurant broth

Haidilao urination news

Two 17-year-olds in Shanghai have been ordered to pay 2.2 million yuan (USD $309,000) in damages after urinating into a pot of broth at a Haidilao hotpot restaurant and posting the video online.

The court found their actions infringed upon the company’s property rights and reputation, with their parents held liable for failing to exercise proper guardianship.

The compensation covers operational losses, reputational harm, tableware replacement, cleaning expenses, and legal costs.

Haidilao had voluntarily compensated over 4,000 diners and replaced equipment following the incident, but the court ruled those payouts were beyond what the teens were responsible for.

The case sparked widespread criticism and highlighted the reputational risks for China’s largest hotpot chain, which operates more than 1,000 restaurants worldwide.
