A former NHS vascular surgeon has been removed from the UK medical register after admitting he deliberately amputated both of his own legs as part of a long-standing sexual fetish.
Dr Neil Hopper, who previously worked at Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, carried out the act in April 2019 by using approximately 20 kilograms of dry ice to inflict severe frostbite on his lower limbs. The injuries were so extensive that both legs later had to be amputated below the knee.
A tribunal heard Hopper had exchanged more than 5,000 messages with the operator of the infamous “Eunuch Maker” website and had paid for extreme amputation-related pornography. Investigators found the amputations were intentionally self-inflicted to satisfy his fetish.
Following the procedure, Hopper falsely claimed his injuries were caused by sepsis after a family camping trip. He repeated the story to medical professionals, insurance companies and during an appearance on ITV’s This Morning.
Authorities later discovered he had fraudulently obtained almost £467,000 from two insurers based on the false account. Hopper subsequently pleaded guilty to fraud offences and possession of extreme pornographic material.
The General Medical Council’s Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service ruled that Hopper’s conduct fundamentally breached the standards expected of a doctor and posed a serious risk to public confidence in the medical profession. The tribunal ordered his immediate removal from the medical register, preventing him from practising medicine in the UK.
