‘Utterly Insane’: Spectacular footage captures plane flying into eye of Hurricane Melissa

Incredible footage circulating on social media shows a research aircraft flying directly into the eye of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, offering a breathtaking view of nature’s raw power.

The video, shared widely across X, has stunned meteorologists and viewers alike.

“Utterly insane to think this is real footage from inside a category 5 hurricane,” one user wrote. “Could easily be a different world. Melissa is textbook.”

The video shows the aircraft breaking through towering storm clouds before emerging into the eerie calm of the hurricane’s eye, surrounded by a towering wall of swirling cumulonimbus, a phenomenon known as the stadium effect.

Weather analyst Colin McCarthy of US Storm Watch described the video as “the best hurricane footage I’ve ever seen,” adding in another post, “This footage from inside the eye of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa might be the most jaw-dropping video ever captured of a hurricane’s eye, showcasing the infamous ‘stadium effect.’”

Meteorologists say the flight was part of a planned reconnaissance mission to collect critical data on Hurricane Melissa’s structure, intensity, and wind speeds. The storm, currently spinning over the Atlantic with sustained winds exceeding 250 km/h, has been labelled a textbook example of a fully developed Category 5 system.
