The country recorded more than 40,000 new home consents in the year to June, the first time that level has been reached since 2023, according to newly released Stats NZ data.
Consents were up 19 percent compared with the previous year, with increases across standalone houses, townhouses and retirement villages.
The figures coincide with a 35.1 percent annual rise in construction job advertisements reported by SEEK, indicating stronger activity in the sector.
Building and Construction Minister Chris Penk said the Government’s programme of building system reforms aims to reduce regulatory barriers, expand access to overseas building products, speed up consent processing, increase competition among consent authorities, and introduce changes including proportionate liability, mandatory home warranties, professional indemnity insurance, and a fast-track consent pathway for homes incorporating sustainable features.
