Business confidence has surged to its ‘strongest level in three decades’, pointing to a broad-based economic recovery driven by improving activity, employment and expectations.
ANZ’s latest Business Outlook survey shows headline confidence climbed sharply, with a large majority of firms expecting better conditions ahead, while the closely watched own-activity measure also reached a 30-year high.
Reported past activity rose to its strongest level since 2021, a signal economists say suggests GDP growth is set to accelerate. Employment conditions have also improved to their best level in more than two years, although retail continues to lag. Inflation expectations remain stable, while skill shortages are beginning to re-emerge, though far less intensely than in previous cycles.
Despite weaker commodity prices weighing on agriculture, economists say the upswing elsewhere is strong enough to sustain the recovery, with reassurance from the central bank helping underpin confidence.
