For almost half a century, George Ace, 68, groomed and repeatedly sexually violated two children under 12, exploiting the trust placed in him by their families.
Between them, the victims endured 46 separate charges: 37 counts against a young boy and 9 against a girl.
The catalogue of abuse was chilling in its variety and duration, including oral sex, attempted anal penetration, indecent touching, and repeated rape of the boy over years. Ace once threw the boy against a weight bench in rage and threatened to harm his family if he ever spoke out.
The two survivors, unaware of each other’s suffering at the time, delivered searing victim impact statements in Whangārei District Court.
The male survivor spoke of a lifetime of worthlessness and low self-esteem; the woman described being manipulated into what she called “pure acts of evil” that still haunted her with dark thoughts decades later.
Both victims urged other victims to contact police. “Come forward. You are not alone. What lies in the dark eventually comes to the light.”
Judge Philip Rzepecky labelled the offending “depraved acts on innocent children” for Ace’s own gratification, carried out in calculated breach of trust.
Despite no previous convictions and Ace’s continued denial of guilt, the judge imposed 15 years’ imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 7½ years, and permanent registration as a child sex offender.

I have no problem with this jail sentence as he will probably die in prison. The problem I have is how the hell a lowlife high on meth who drove his car across a barrier controlled rail crossing into the path of an oncoming train killing three of his mates ends up with just an eight year jail term and can apply for parole after serving four years.
