In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, American-born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected pope, becoming the first pontiff born in North America.
Now known as Pope Leo XIV, the 69-year-old Chicago native appeared on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica to deliver his first public address, greeting thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square with a call for global peace.
Prevost’s election was met with jubilant cheers as the papal tapestry was unfurled and cardinals assembled to present the new pope.
In Italian, he addressed the crowd: “Peace be with all of you. Brothers and sisters dearest, this is the first greeting of Christ resurrected… May peace be with you.”
A former Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru and the head of the Order of Saint Augustine, Pope Leo XIV also held the powerful position of Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops since 2023. His Peruvian-American background and decades of missionary and administrative service in Latin America and the Vatican have reportedly made him a globally respected figure.

While I have no interest in religion, this is a useful opportunity to look at what various media say about the same thing to test their accuracy. NZ Herald and BBC describe Leo XIV as the first American pope (and ignore the fact that Pope Francis was born in South America) while DTNZ correctly reports Leo XIV is the first born in North America
Amongst other things, I noted above that this cardinal was “head of the Order of Saint Augustine” so I looked up Augustine on wikipedia to find that Saint Augustine was the first clear advocate of “Just war theory” which is the idea that war can be morally justifiable. This is the opposite viewpoint of Jesus and the original believers in the New Testament.
