The ‘traffic light’ system for determining COVID-19 restrictions in place around the country will begin on Friday 3 December 2021.
Most of the country will start with ‘orange’, while Auckland, Northland, Taupō and Rotorua Lakes Districts, Kawerau, Whakatane, Ōpōtiki Districts, Gisborne District, Wairoa District, Rangitikei, Whanganui and Ruapehu Districts will all start at ‘red’.
No regions start at green, despite some areas not registering any COVID case for three months.
The press conference announcement video was published to YouTube by NZHerald, with comments turned off to eliminate debate, as expected. Please feel free to comment below.
The Twitterverse was not impressed:
I really don't understand why areas in NZ that have had no Covid cases for say 90 days shouldn't be Green. One can change them to Orange if a case emerges. But if no region today can be green, that implies no region ever will be green.

The PM denied she was cancelling summer festivals (like Rhythm and Vines) even though the government edicts make it legally impossible for those festivals to operate. She said they were "commercial decisions" which is sophistry of the worst kind.

"But Ardern said Aucklanders would be able to visit family and friends, in their homes, under the red light setting.
She added: "And use the bathroom."
