Australian MP Helen Haines has undergone the amputation of both legs after being struck by a Toyota LandCruiser outside her electorate office on Monday.

Her husband, Phil Haines, confirmed that surgeons removed her left leg shortly after the incident and were subsequently unable to save her right leg.

Despite her devastating injuries, Haines remains alive and in a stable condition, although she faces a lengthy recovery. Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn condemned the attack and urged greater civility in political debate, praising the bystanders and emergency personnel who assisted the MP.

Victorian man Brendan Nugent, 43, has appeared in court facing five charges, including intentionally causing serious injury and harming a Commonwealth public official. He did not seek bail and is expected to face a committal hearing in February.
