Twelve people, including one of the gunmen, are confirmed dead following a terrorist shooting at Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration, in what authorities say was a targeted attack against Sydney’s Jewish community.
A further 29 people were injured, including two police officers who remain in serious condition, and were taken to hospitals across Sydney.
NSW Police have identified one of the gunmen as Naveed Akram, from Bonnyrigg in Sydney’s south-west, confirming earlier reports from Australian state media.
The shooting occurred during celebrations attended by more than 1,000 people. NSW Premier Chris Minns said the nature of the attack made clear it was deliberately aimed at the Jewish community, and police formally declared the incident a terrorist act at 9.36pm.
NSW Police Commissioner Lanyon said investigators are examining information from multiple sources but would not confirm whether a third offender was involved. Riot squad officers were deployed to maintain calm. “This disgraceful act will not go unpunished,” he said.
The attack has prompted heightened security measures nationwide. Victoria Police announced the immediate deployment of additional officers to Melbourne’s Caulfield and broader Glen Eira areas to reassure the local Jewish community. Hanukkah events at Caulfield Racecourse and Federation Square were ended early as a precaution.
Victoria Police said extra patrols around synagogues, schools and community facilities would continue under existing operations.
