One of the gunmen involved in Sunday evening’s deadly shooting at Bondi has been identified by Australian state broadcaster ABC as Narveed Akram, a resident of Bonnyrigg in Sydney’s south-west.
A senior law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed Akram’s identity and said police are currently executing a raid at his Bonnyrigg home as part of the ongoing investigation.
Ten people have been confirmed dead.
The identification comes as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese convened an urgent meeting of Cabinet’s National Security Committee (NSC).
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said the prime minister is receiving briefings from all relevant security agencies, including the Australian Federal Police.
The NSC, which considers the country’s highest-risk national security matters, has the authority to make decisions without full Cabinet approval.
As emergency services continue to respond, hospitals across Sydney are under pressure. ABC reporter Jeremy Fernandez, speaking from St Vincent’s Hospital, said additional staff were being called in to manage a surge of patients following the shootings. He noted the proximity of the hospital to the Bondi Junction stabbing attack last year, describing a sense of shock and grim familiarity among medical staff and journalists alike.
Community leaders have also responded swiftly. The Australian National Imams Council and the Council of Imams NSW issued a joint statement unequivocally condemning the violence, expressing condolences to the victims and their families, and calling for unity and solidarity across all communities. The statement rejected violence in all forms and urged Australians to support one another as investigations into the Bondi attack continue.
