Chief Judge may be called in Aitken inquiry

Judge Ema Aitken conduct scandal continues

A judicial conduct panel will next month examine allegations that District Court Judge Ema Aitken disrupted a New Zealand First event at Auckland’s Northern Club in 2024, with the Chief District Court Judge potentially called to give evidence.

Judge Aitken denies shouting at NZ First leader Winston Peters, saying she did not recognise his voice, was unaware the gathering was political, and did not knowingly disrupt the event.

According to a report today in state media, a December minute indicates her counsel intends to seek summonses for witnesses, including Chief District Court Judge Heemi Taumaunu and a Ministry of Justice employee.

The panel, chaired by retired Court of Appeal Judge Brendan Brown KC alongside Justice Jillian Mallon and former Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae, will determine the facts and report to the attorney-general on whether Judge Aitken’s removal is warranted, following a hearing scheduled in Auckland in February.

  1. Shouting at a political event should be a non-event. More people should hold politicians feet to the fire. There’s nothing that says everyone has to sit quietly and listen to their monotonous lies.

  2. I wonder IF Aitken hears cases from the Family Court….if so, then with her personality-type that oozes with National Party entitlement and Labour dictates that enforce the status-quo from the bench, no wonder Tom took the kids and hid-out in the bush before being essentially murdered over a bad child custody call by the …(ahem)…’Family Court’…!
