A private jet carrying Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team narrowly avoided a collision with a departing flight at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Friday, December 27.
The Key Lime Air Flight 563 was directed by air traffic control to “hold short” of a runway where another plane was taking off.
However, the Embraer E135 jet began to cross the hold bars, prompting an air traffic controller to urgently command, “stop, stop, stop,” as captured in a livestream video by YouTuber Airline Videos. The jet halted before crossing the runway edge line, averting a potentially catastrophic accident. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident.
The incident unfolded amidst heightened global aviation concerns, following two fatal crashes in South Korea and Azerbaijan earlier this year.
Plane spotter Kevin Ray, who recorded the event, noted the rarity of hearing such a directive from air traffic controllers. While the FAA stated the situation was contained without any breach of the runway, the close call underscores ongoing challenges in ensuring air safety during a year that has already become the deadliest for aviation since 2018.
We’re seeing more of this, and regional feeder route airports need to be modernised and able to reduce the air and ground traffic at the major airports worldwide.
