Defence Minister Judith Collins has unveiled a new Defence Industry Strategy aimed at strengthening New Zealand’s military capability while fostering a defence technology sector capable of “exporting lethal weapons”.
The plan includes a $100–$300 million “Technology Accelerator” to partner with local tech companies, with the goal of developing advanced dual-use technologies for both the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) and international markets.
Collins said deterrence required credible weapons, not “puppets,” and argued that New Zealand must be battle-ready in an increasingly tense global environment.
The strategy also demands greater collaboration between major multinational suppliers and local businesses, with a focus on innovation, resilience, and integration with Australia.
With $12 billion in defence spending planned over four years, the government aims to lift spending to over 2 percent of GDP within eight years, positioning defence industry growth as both a national security priority and an export opportunity.

The less defensive capability we have the better as far as china et al is concerned – and right now we have less than f-all defensive capability.
Here was me reading that article and thinking how difficult it will be for nz defence industry to meet these challenges because we no longer refine anything or manufacture anything and we force our brightest into Māori indoctrination courses instead of engineering or tech courses.
And then I started reading the comments section and frankly you’re all living in la la land! At least Judith is pointing in the right direction- even if it won’t live up up to the genuine need our defence forces have for weapons, training, equipment & a halfway decent pay check that says thanks for being ready to lay down your life for our country.
