Convicted teacher abused nine girls despite warnings and police red flags

Timothy Fisher news

Auckland teacher Timothy Fisher, recently jailed for abusing nine girls and creating child exploitation material, was able to continue teaching despite prior indecency convictions, police warnings, and disciplinary action.

A report in legacy media (paywalled) revealed Fisher passed multiple police vetting checks under the Clean Slate Act and maintained registration through the Teaching Council, even after a 2014 police report flagged him as unsuitable for unsupervised contact with children.

Despite misconduct findings in 2021, Fisher was not required to inform employers and went on to teach at state schools and private tutoring firm EduExperts, where much of the offending occurred.

The Teaching Council has apologised and launched a thorough investigation, while critics say systemic failures allowed a known offender to remain in classrooms, putting children at unnecessary risk.

  1. Maybe the Police should investigate how this was allowed to happen, maybe it was a ‘someone’ and not a ‘system’, that allowed it, and the Police would be the best ones to investigate, rather than the ‘system’ investigating the ‘system’! After all, it was the system that allowed this to happen again.
