A government advisory group has warned that corruption and insider threats are growing in New Zealand, driven by organised crime exploiting weak points at borders and within institutions.
Despite the country’s reputation for low corruption, the group says New Zealand is poorly prepared to counter the threat and lacks a national anti-corruption strategy—unlike other Five Eyes nations.
The report by the The Ministerial Advisory Group on Transnational and Organised Crime highlights increasing vulnerability due to trusted insiders at ports and airports, with organised crime using bribery, coercion, and cronyism to access sensitive information and smuggle drugs and other illicit goods.
Associate Police Minister Casey Costello says New Zealand must modernise its Crimes Act, improve agency cooperation, and consider a centralised oversight body, while also helping Pacific nations strengthen their own defences.
