Senator Chris Van Hollen met with deported illegal immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador after being repeatedly denied access, insisting the visit was to “check on Garcia’s well-being”.
Garcia, who was living unlawfully in Maryland, was deported to the CECOT megaprison last month—an action the Trump administration defends as proper, citing evidence of his MS-13 gang membership and domestic violence allegations from his wife, who accused him of repeated physical abuse.
Despite court orders to return Garcia for further proceedings, El Salvador has chosen to keep him in custody.
President Nayib Bukele mocked legacy media and Democrat claims of mistreatment by sharing photos of Garcia with Van Hollen enjoying drinks in tropical surroundings.
The Department of Homeland Security maintains Garcia poses a threat to public safety, and Attorney General Pam Bondi affirmed he would not be allowed back into the United States unless El Salvador decided otherwise.
