World champion Luke Littler has warned he could stop competing in darts events in the Netherlands after enduring sustained booing and whistling at the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam.
The 19-year-old faced such a hostile atmosphere during his narrow quarter-final victory over Nathan Aspinall on Saturday that the referee temporarily halted the match to address the crowd, following similar treatment during Littler’s win over Dutch favourite Danny Noppert a day earlier.
Littler, who has already withdrawn from European Tour events in Germany after encountering comparable receptions, said he would be prepared to take the same approach in the Netherlands, arguing there was little reason to travel to tournaments simply to be booed.
He said the hostile reaction had also prompted him to leave the stage without acknowledging spectators after his matches. Littler has previously faced jeers at the PDC World Championship, where he responded by saying the abuse did not bother him and jokingly thanked spectators because their ticket purchases contributed to his prize money.
