Army veteran Jarreth Colquhoun died after jumping 38m from the Hikitia crane into Wellington Harbour during the busy Manu World Champs in 2023.
High on meth, cannabis, alcohol, and amphetamine, Colquhoun did not resurface after hitting the water at nearly 100km/h.
A coroner has ruled his death was likely caused by the dangerous combination of meth use and cold water immersion.
The report cleared suicide as a motive and called for increased safety measures around the crane, noting past incidents and the crane’s appeal to thrill-seekers. Wellington City Council and the Maritime Heritage Trust have accepted the recommendations and are implementing new safeguards.
Was looking at a program featuring one of the old crane drivers about the wharf at Greymouth (Yew Tube)
He as part of his duties used to have to go to he end of the boom to grease the ‘wheel’
What he did was put the boom out over the river in case he fell off
Obviously an operation not carried out during a flood

But anyway looks like the tax payer just saved some money and most probably sparing some person some grief
Darwin’s selection still working if it wasn’t for the goody-two-shoes mutants to save them.
This really isn’t the cranes fault, surely?
This is extremely sad. Condolences to his family. I doubt very much that he was alone in the consumption of alcohol, cannabis or methamphetamine and there will be many who are breathing “there but for the grace of God go I…”
Until organically grown weed is separated from the chemical meth and retarded hothouse weed we will continue to see this spurious waste of life.
