In 2023, 79-year-old John Lindsay Ellis, a high-risk sex offender with a suppressed criminal history, was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for indecently assaulting a 4-year-old boy and an adult at an emergency housing motel in Auckland, where children also resided.
Despite the Crown’s push for preventive detention due to Ellis’ ongoing danger to the community, Justice David Johnstone opted for a determinate sentence, citing Ellis’ physical and cognitive decline, observed during the hearing as he appeared frail in a wheelchair.
The judge imposed a minimum imprisonment period of two years and six months, noting Ellis’ entrenched deviant behavior and lack of insight despite years of psychological treatment.
Extensive court suppression orders limited details of Ellis’ background, but an extended supervision order upon release was deemed sufficient for public safety, given his diminishing capacities.

It does appear that name suppression can have a detrimental effect on the general public.
It needs to abolished and outlawed. The public have a right to know who the criminals are and what they’ve done. We can handle it.
To those criminals, castration should be applied immediately
Years ago, a yougoslavian female vet was raped by a man.
She later made friend with the rapist and invited him at her home.
She drugged him and cut his ball off.
She went to prison.
But it was worth it
Sounds like a ballsup
Was his name then changed to Just Juice?
Clearly past his used by date
Needs to be put out of our misery
This old prick just scammed the judge with his wheel chair and pretend cognitive impairment, ahem – lack of concentration during the hearing.
NZ courts continue to be a joke.
They should have chopped his nuts off ages ago.
