The New Zealand Defence Force has confirmed that elite NZSAS operators, including specialist bush trackers, were deployed three times to help police locate fugitive father Tom Phillips and his three missing children in the Marokopa area.

Documents released under the Official Information Act to legacy media (paywalled) reveal that between June 2024 and April 2025, up to four armed SAS personnel were embedded with the police’s Special Tactics Group to provide discreet tracking and reconnaissance support.

Despite sightings, difficult terrain and bad weather hindered progress until Phillips was killed in a shootout with police in September 2025.

The SAS operations, approved under provisions of the Defence Act allowing military aid to civil authorities, are among the rare occasions the elite force has been used in domestic policing.

Well they were deployed and they weren’t experts
