Firearms IT overhaul paused as regulator uncertainty forces project rethink

The IT programme supporting the country’s firearms regulatory overhaul has been paused after a Treasury report rated the Arms Transformation project red, citing uncertainty over what digital systems would be required if a new firearms regulator is established.

The September report, released this week, said police minister intervention may be needed to resolve major issues, although police insisted nothing had gone wrong and said the rating reflected unresolved ICT requirements identified in a Gateway review while legislation creating a new regulator remains before Parliament.

Firearms Safety Authority business transformation director Richard Wilson told state media work had been halted until the legislative process is clearer, while noting the broader Arms Transformation Programme had previously tracked at green/amber, with the firearms registry delivered on budget in 2023 and now continuing to expand alongside ongoing work with Treasury and the Ministry of Justice.

  1. I hope the whole thing falls on its face….simply afraid of the people because you are not doing the right thin by them.
