Thousands of properties across New Zealand have been left without power overnight as wild weather continues to lash large parts of the country.
According to state-funded media, in the South Island State Highway 1 has reopened between Blenheim and Kaikōura, but State Highway 7 remains closed between the Hanmer Springs turn-off and Springs Junction due to dangerous conditions.
In Kaikōura, fires fanned by gale-force winds have destroyed 14 buildings, including five homes, and forced residents to evacuate. Fire and Emergency crews, supported by helicopters, are still working to extinguish the remaining blazes.
Further north, multiple fires in Pōrangahau, Hawke’s Bay, have also prompted evacuations of five households. Firefighters began attacking that blaze this morning, using four helicopters and an airplane as strong winds continue to hinder efforts.
Authorities warn the situation could deteriorate on Thursday, with MetService forecasting further damaging gales that could intensify existing fires. Orange wind warnings are in place for much of the South Island and lower North Island, with some areas possibly upgraded to Red. Heavy rain is also expected to add to the disruption, particularly in Wellington and the upper South Island.
Residents are urged to stay alert for civil defence updates and to check MetService’s website for the latest watches and warnings.
I didn’t know Arthur Brown was in NZ?
Lost power most of the day, which was actually quite nice as we talked, played a card game and read books. The internet was not greatly missed…..
