Four-year Parliamentary Term Bill introduced

The coalition government has introduced legislation to extend the parliamentary term to four years, contingent on the outcome of a binding referendum.

The proposal, supported by National, ACT, and New Zealand First, includes a key condition from ACT: the extension would only take effect if select committees are structured to reflect the proportion of non-Executive MPs.

Otherwise, the term would remain at three years.

Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith stated the bill aligns with ACT’s draft Constitution Amendment Bill and will undergo public consultation through a select committee.

While the government has yet to decide on the bill’s future beyond committee stages, a referendum could potentially be held alongside the 2026 General Election.

  1. That scheming cartel!
Do they really think we want these sociopaths herding us for one year longer without the option to vote them out?

  2. We are all mandated to send our sons to war and die for democracy. Surely, if democracy is so crucial to kill our offspring, why not do this?

Mandate a referendum to dismiss a sitting government after 2 years.
Include binding referendums on public submissions that achieve more the 5%
Include mandatory referendums just like Sweden does.

Killing our kids for parliamentary to stay in power doesn’t work for me.

  3. huh, pagan pollies also known as pee pee’s want 4x yr terms, surprised they weren’t after 3yrs 3months and 3 days as per their PAGAN GOD. Referendum of course vote NO…… p.s many times..

  4. The answer is simple my friends. 4 years no problem, but political parties are banned, all candidates who wish to become MP’s must be independent, all policy and law changes voted on by the voters pre election or otherwise by referendum. True democracy.

    • And every cent of the candidates income to be made available to the public, all political candidates to have to use tracable digital currency, using cash of credit prohibited.

The Maori Party Greens the whole disastrous lot
    And run it with AI
Would make for a more stable efficient government making better derived at decisions
The Treaty of Waitangi is a fake document adulterated and altered shrouded in International Law that protects minority indigenous races garnished with cultural customary rights
And should extend to health and the Judiciary
And a lot cheaper to run
Maybe not the whole answer but AI will have some niche and application where it can be applied and improve what is clearly a failing and decrepit model based on the Jewish Sanhedrin – greater
A model that extends to regional councils – lesser

  6. “Masculine republics give way to feminine democracies, and feminine democracies give way to tyranny.” – Aristotle
We don’t want to be tricked into giving ‘feminine democracy’ any more power than it already has, as it marches us towards tyranny.
We need a referendum on a Republic (freedom) verses a Democracy (tyranny).
