Gene Tech Bill faces further delays amid ongoing scrutiny

Gene Tech Bill news

PM Christopher Luxon has rejected claims that New Zealand First is stalling the government’s Gene Technology Bill, saying delays reflect the need to carefully handle a complex issue.

The legislation, which would ease a decades-long ban on genetic technologies outside laboratories and establish a “dedicated regulator”, has faced multiple reporting extensions, with NZ First stressing the importance of trade-offs and potential risks to the country’s “GE-free” advantage.

While Labour, the Greens, and Te Pāti Māori oppose the bill, it requires full coalition support to pass, prompting speculation of internal disagreements. Luxon insists the government is committed to advancing the bill, but only with a “cautious”, “well-drafted” approach.

Labour’s science spokesman Reuben Davidson said, “There isn’t a pathway within the coalition to support the bill. So it would seem that behind closed doors there’s disagreement, bickering, and a lack of clarity on a direction to move forward.”

  1. Lable the products and all is good. Won’t buy them. Make in voluntry also. No poison to our livestock! Cow farts cause glabal crisis, this is so ridiculous. Trump has already said the whole thing is a scam too. No spraying crap in our atmosphere either.

    • The bill has provisions for mandated medical interventions. Labelling is one thing – if they even have to label some of the approved products. Spillover of GM will happen too.

Why are you listening to Trump still? He is protecting child traffickers and abusers that all through the electioneering he said he would bring to justice. He is enabling the genocide of Palestinians.

Is that really someone worth believing?

  2. The individuals voting for this horror bill will have a hard time explaining their vote to concerned Kiwis asking them questions, ya know.
The individuals voting for this horror bill will have their infamous names memorized in history.

  3. To be expected.

RFK basically nuked all funding for most MRNA a week or two ago (25 or 30 different vaccines as I recall).

The whole insidious, festering, scheme is on hold until they can find a way to buy/rig another US election.

Wellington are basically in a holding pattern until our owner, Larry Fink, tells them what to do next.

    • It’s a bait and switch. All that money will be redirected towards a universal vaccine. And, an mRNA platform could still be used

  4. If Luxton wants to continue down the same path as Starmer and Ardern, he will receive the same outcome. Hold your ground Winston. Do not let this gene bill become law. New Zealands pure image will be lost forever. Our exports at best will half.

If it were me i’de threaten Luxon with a snap election. Everyone knows Luxon is done for.

  5. So National wants to pass a ‘Gene Tech’bill but there are surprises in it that they were not aware of before? Maybe it’s not Nationals Bill? Maybe they have just been handed it and told to pass it into legislation? Whose Bill is it really? Hmmmm.

  6. No one wants this, no one asked for this but then I get the impression this lot don’t seem to think the views of their employers, the NZ public matter all that much.

Anyone voting for this lot or the other cheek, Labour is a complete prat. End of story.
