Government moves to ban protests outside private homes

The Government is introducing a new law to curb targeted and disruptive protests outside people’s homes, Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith has announced.

Goldsmith said while the right to protest is a cornerstone of “New Zealand’s democracy”, recent incidents of demonstrations targeting private residences — particularly those of public figures such as MPs, judges, and officials — had raised concerns about privacy and safety.

“Everyone in New Zealand, and their families, should be able to expect peace and privacy in their own home, no matter what their daytime job is,” he said. “We intend to stop this intrusive behaviour, while protecting the public’s right to demonstrate in a reasonable manner.”

The legislation will create a new offence for engaging in a targeted, disruptive demonstration outside a residential property, with penalties of up to three months in jail or a $2,000 fine. The offence will only apply to protests directed at a person in their home and will consider factors such as the time of day, duration, noise levels, actions of demonstrators, and proximity to the residence.

Goldsmith emphasised that the measure is a “reasonable limitation” under the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act, balancing the right to protest with the right to privacy. “Unreasonable intrusions into people’s privacy are simply unacceptable,” he said.

  1. It’s highly amusing the way these bent lawyers introduce ‘reasonable’ limitations on rights to protect themselves and their dodgy mates.

Obviously If rights have limitations then they’re not really ‘rights’ at all.

    • Well said.

Zero-coverage marches through empty CBD’s on a Sunday afternoon are the only recourse our weak and wishy washy “democracy” will tolerate.

And those digital ID’s are on their way to neuter the internet. They’re already moist at the thought of locking us up for Facebook posts while they nervously assure us we still have free speech (like their retarded mate in the UK).

They haven’t let go of their agenda 2030 BS, even after all that’s happened to expose them.

      Dark days coming

      • Does this mean that Maori Hikois that pass thru neighbourhoods in front of homes are going to be fined & jailed?
Goldsmith is not to be trusted, just like Chris Finlayson and John Key!

  2. Well Goldsmith, if PUBLIC SERVANTS were doing RIGHT by we the people, then they would be left alone RIGHT!!
As for your decree, you can shove it were the sun don’t shine, sunshine. Freedom is the God given RIGHT of the people, not artificial persons, i.e. corporations.

  3. Will Section 5 of BORA apply in some cases? Does the right of the public to protest outweigh the ruling class elites’ right to privacy? For the greater good?

  4. Well clearly its not a cornerstone of democracy, if you plan to impose limitations like this upon it. I’ll add to, the more you try to censor people, the greater the likelihood words will be replaced by actions. Even kettles have valves to release built up steam. Another incompetent move by an incompetent, short sighted, government.

    • “The more you try to censor people, the greater the likelihood words will be replaced by actions.”
      Too right!
I’m not sure if these masters of rort can see the danger beyond protests. For self-serving and self-centered egomaniacs, self-preservation surpasses all statesmanship. Their confirmation bias prevents to even ponder populous discontent. For THEM it’s against US.
And if you happen to know some of THEM from school you’d know that almost nothing will make them social.
At any rate, THEM are too many to receive a SS detail watching their back.
“Everyone in New Zealand, and their families, should be able to expect peace and privacy in their own home, no matter what their daytime job is,” says Goldsmith. Yeah, OK, but your polit-mafia avoids demonstrators, as YOU ALL shown us during the covid protests. The protection from the People’s protests you and your ilk, Mr Goldsmith, seek is not the protection cops for example should receive, even when you sent them beating up unarmed protestors, neither are you some ‘normal’ snake-oil salesman who needs personal protection from being doxxed. No, YOUR ilk wreak havoc among We The People and YOU are selling Godzone’s wealth to the highest corporate bidders.
Even your inquiries are a sham. We are not your sheeple.
Of course WE will have our say, one way or another.
